Australian Health Care Standards
Toronto Private Hospital is fully accredited with the Australian Council of Health Care Standards.
As an organisation, we are committed to providing high quality care to our patients and their families that is safe and effective. As a result we have aligned our hospital with the eight Clinical Care Standards from the Australian Commission on Quality and Safety in Healthcare. In short, this means that everything we do is always based on current best practice guidelines. As an organisation we look forward to communicating and working in partnership with you and your families.

Toronto Private Hospital takes pride that our performance has been assessed and accredited by ACHS against all eight standards.
Standard 1: Clinical Governance for Safety and Quality in Healthcare
What this means for you:
- Toronto Private Hospital has policies, practices and systems in place that effectively manages your safety and risks
- All care provided to you by our staff are guided by best practice guidelines
- Managers and the clinical workforce have the right qualifications, skills and approach to provide you safe, high-quality health care.
Standard 2: Partnering with Consumers
What this means for you:
- Toronto Private Hospital forms partnerships with consumers and carers through our consumer advisory group providing input into our future planning
- Consumers and carers are supported by Toronto Private Hospital to actively provide feedback on your patient experience and health outcomes
- Consumers and carers receive information on Toronto Private Hospital performance and contribute to the ongoing monitoring, measurement and evaluation of performance for continuous quality improvement.
Standard 3: Preventing and Controlling Healthcare Associated Infections
What this means for you:
- Toronto Private Hospital has effective policies and systems in place to prevent and control infections associated with a hospital stay
- Patients presenting with, or acquiring an infection during their care are identified promptly and receive the necessary management and treatment
- Safe and appropriate antibiotic prescribing is monitored and openly discussed with our medical team
- Toronto Private Hospital ensures our facility and the associated environment are clean and hygienic
- Information on hospital acquired infections is provided to patients, carers, consumer and service providers.
Standard 4: Medication Safety
What this means for you:
- Toronto Private Hospital has effective policies and systems in place for the safe management of medicine
- On Admission, our doctors and nurses accurately record your medication history and this history is available throughout your stay in your medical record
- Our doctors and nurses provide a complete list of your medicines to the receiving clinician when handing over care or changing medicines.
- Our doctors will inform you about your options, risks and responsibilities for an agreed medication management plan.
Standard 6: Comprehensive Care
What this means for you:
- Toronto Private Hospital has effective policies and systems in place to ensure that your information is handed over to the relevant clinicians in a timely manner.
- Toronto Private Hospital actively encourages you and your carers to be involved in key handovers so you can clarify information and ask questions.
Standard 7: Blood Management
What this means for you:
- Toronto Private Hospital has effective policies and systems in place for the safe management of blood and blood products
- The doctors and nurses accurately record your blood and blood product transfusion history and indications for use of blood and blood product
- You and your carers are informed about the risks and benefits of using blood and blood products, and the available alternatives when a plan for treatment is developed.
Standard 8: Recognising and Responding to Clinical Deterioration in Acute Health Care
What this means for you:
- Toronto Private Hospital clinicians are trained in recognising when a patient’s condition is deteriorating and appropriate action is taken to escalate care
- Appropriate and timely care is provided to patients whose condition is deteriorating
- Toronto Private Hospital encourages carers to inform the clinicians if they are concerned a loved one is deteriorating to ensure care is escalated.
What are we doing to meet the standards?
The team at Toronto Private Hospital are continuously working towards meeting the standards. Some of our recently completed projects include:
- Meal substitute card Aim to inform consumer of change to meal choice- completed April
- Eliminate plastic and foams cups and plastic straws and replace with paper Aim: to be environmental friendly - completed April
- Menu change Aim: to ensure patients have the opportunity to select food that satisfies their nutrient requirements – completed April
- Communication for safety Aim: reinforcement of ISBAR a safe communication tool to support the communication and handover of critical information with patient, their family, and the medical and multidisciplinary team to enable the escalation of care to be implemented – completion April
- Reuse towel sign in patient bathroom Aim: By patient reusing towels this will help the environment and costs associated with water and power usage – completed April
