Inside the newly opened $9.3 million wing at Toronto Private Hospital

PANAROMIC photographs and bright decor provide a resort-like feel to the mental health rooms in the newly opened wing unveiled this week at Toronto Private Hospital.

The two-storey addition to the Healthe Care property was constructed over eight months at a cost of $9.3 million.

The new wing includes 10 new mental health beds on the upper level and 10 new rehabilitation beds on the lower level.

That takes the hospital’s total number of beds to 105.

Hospital chief executive officer Jason Thomas said the new facilities had been complemented by the addition of about 10 new medical, nursing and allied health care staff.

He said the design of the new mental health rooms was a feature of the wing.

“Our mental health rooms have been designed to replicate the comfort and luxury experienced in the best hotels and will help cement our reputation as the facility of choice for patients wishing to receive treatment for mental health conditions in the greater Hunter region,” Mr Thomas said.

“The hotel-style look in the rooms helps to take away the stigma that can sometimes be attached to a hospital room.”

The 10 new mental health rooms took the total number of rooms at the hospital dedicated to mental health to 35, he said.

The 10 new rehabilitation rooms boosted the total number of rehab rooms at the hospital to 50.

The hospital also provides medical and palliative care beds.

The new wing includes a group room, allied health office, work station/reception desks and a garden courtyard.

Mr Thomas said the new space was created in consultation with staff and other stakeholders.

“Through in-depth staff, doctor and community consultation we have arrived with a product and service that meets the needs of the patients and wider community,” he said.

“We worked with our rehabilitation physicians, nurses and patients to design rehab rooms that are functional and allow for the highest levels of patient safety.”

He said early feedback on the new wing was encouraging.

“It’s been very positive,” he said.

“People are commenting on the size of the rooms, the layout, and furnishings. Overall, the finished product is a great place to work in.”

Mr Thomas hinted that further expansion of the hospital was likely.

“We’ll continue to review that. It’s important that the hospital is meeting the demands of the community. I’m sure that we will continue to grow to meet those demands.”
